Two Approaches to Decision-Making

Trading decisions can be made through two fundamentally different processes. Discretionary trading relies on human judgment in real time. Systematic trading relies on predefined rules applied consistently. Neither approach is inherently superior — each has strengths and limitations.

Discretionary Trading

Discretionary trading involves real-time interpretation of market conditions:

  • ▸Interpretation — the trader reads charts, news, and context to form a view
  • ▸Emotion — psychological factors influence entry, exit, and position sizing
  • ▸Subjective decisions — each trade is evaluated individually, with criteria that may vary
  • ▸Inconsistent execution — the same setup may be traded differently on different occasions

Systematic Trading

Systematic trading follows predefined, codified rules:

  • ▸Predefined rules — entry, exit, and risk criteria are specified before execution
  • ▸Repeatable decisions — the same conditions produce the same action every time
  • ▸Measurable performance — strategy behavior can be backtested and statistically evaluated
  • ▸Controlled risk — position sizing and exposure are defined by formula, not by judgment

Strengths and Limitations

Discretionary trading can adapt to novel situations that rules do not anticipate. It can incorporate qualitative information that is difficult to codify. However, it is vulnerable to emotional bias, fatigue, and inconsistent application of its own criteria.

Systematic trading removes emotional bias and enables rigorous performance measurement. However, rules that worked historically may not adapt to unprecedented market conditions, and a systematic strategy is only as good as the rules that define it.

The Core Distinction

The difference is not about certainty. A systematic approach does not make the future more predictable. It makes the process of responding to the future more consistent.

Conclusion

Systematic trading replaces intuition with process, not uncertainty with certainty.
